The influence of Urban music

How much can Urban music influence someone's life?.

All the talk now a-days is about how urban music is bad for the youth to listen to because of the lyrics used by certain artist's today, or is it the way they say they carry guns on a daily basis?.

Now our point is that Heavy metal music uses even worse lyrics such as 'Hang you off a bridge', 'Worship the devil' and 'slit your own throat'. Why is that genre of music not put down as a bad influence, come on how many people go slitting the wrist after a hip hop show?

Most urban artist say yes i have used weapons but it was not the right thing to do, therefore they are setting a positive image out to the public.

But then again there are the artist who do say they shoot people, when there is a chance the most law breaking thing they have done is dropped a pack of space raiders on the floor and got a fine. Come on if you have killed someone why wright about it and bring attention to yourself.

People need to get on terms with the positive sides to hip hop also instead of focusing all their attention to the negative sides of hip hop. Like i am sure Mr Sean Combs (p.diddy) does a lot of stuff for charity do you ever hear about it? No. But as soon as he robs a lolly pop from a little old lady it will be in every newspaper in the world (not saying this did happen)

Please let us know what your views on the Urban influence are.

If I was I would be careful on defending Hip Hop the way you are and comparing it to Heavy Metal. The reason being is that Hip Hop is a lot more honest than Metal, and what I mean by that is that there is more relation to real life with Hip Hop. Maybe not the UK as much, but definately in America, Hip Hop is made by people who have experianced hardships and reflect upon that in their music. Whereas if you look at metal, biting the heads off bats and talking about slitting your wrists isn't everyday life. It isn't seeing drug pushers, prostitutes, and people getting gunned down. So you cannot compare the effect of lyricism from Metal with Hip Hop because Metal just isn't a reflection of real life, so therefore Hip Hop would have a lot more influence.

I don't even bother trying to defend Hip Hop when people complain about the violence and misogynistic lyrics, because there is no defence for it. Its fair enough for people to be disgusted by it. But what I will defend is when people say how Hip Hop is influencing kids into committing crimes and influencing gun culture. That to me is a cop out, instead of parents blaming themselves because they haven't brought up their kids well enough, they try and place the blame on Hip Hop.

So therefore instead of this topic trying to defend Hip Hops influence by comparing it to Heavy Metal lyrics, you should of aimed it towards parents, who need to teach their kids good morals, values and not to appreciate materialism.

Yes music these days is more-or-less based on stereotypes and scapegoats. Now take 50 for example: He's basically glorified gun chat etc. in rap music, don't get me wrong I don't hate him but he has a cheek to be lablled ''hip-hop''. I think We need to progress more with the positve side, like, what happened to the parties and drinks? (Without the fights lol). I think we need to show that there is gud music and try and tone down the bad side. I mean everytime you mention rap people think guns and drama, an it's not even like that. WE NEED A CHANGE!!

Ive grew up around hip hop all my life an turned out a decent citezin. I mean ok ive probs done somethin wrong in my life who hasnt but just coz ya listen or associate wid hip hop music or the hip hop scene dont mean ya gunna end up bad or do sutin illegal like go an kill sumone.

I mean yano members of parlament do stuff wrong like smoke canibus when dey were younger bu dey didnt listen 2 hip hop da day sumone shows me a pic wid gordan brown in it dressed up like 50 cent den ill take da statement back lol.

i aggrre wid da point bar heavy metal stuff tho people like Korn an all tha talk bar killing themselves and personally after listenin 2 de music i do want to lmao but dey influence people more u walked trough town recently and seen all the kids dressed up as goths and compare it to the amount dressed like dey listen to hip hop goths will out number them becasue the lyrics in heavy metal is more powerful but hip hop gets more bad press coverage cozz the press tinks everyone supportin hip hop is like eazy E and old skool rappers who did actually do stuff wrong but then corrected themselves trying to portray a positive message an tha.

Basicly hip hop lyrics dont influence people if anythin they make people think and do good in life.

Guns, sex and drugs will always be there. They were there before hip hop, hip hop music is just a voice, and in early American rap hip hop was the voice of the streets to let the rest of America know that there was a lot of things going on in the black inner city community that they didn't know about.Yet some newer rap music is more fictional with
alot of artists coming from well off suburban areas yet still talking about a so called struggle. I feel you don't have to be black, broke, ghetto or gangster to rap yet you have to be TRUTHFULL. As many rappers try and fit the normal stereotypical rapper with his bling guns his cars and his hoes, due to this i can see why alot of outsiders view hip hop music as FICTION.
Yet alot of rappers use guns in there lyrics not to promote them but to tell people of the society of which they live in.

The goverment don't like rap music, hip hop music, grime music and they use it as an excuse for gun crime to help cover up there mistakes of letting guns on the streets.
So in the words of Ice cube.
FUCK THE POLICE

Everyone has a valid point, all coming to the conclusion that Hip Hop does not have an influence of people well if it does a very small one.

We have alot of people like that in my school they judge all rap music to be offensive and disrespectful but them same people listen to certain rap songs such as 2pac keep your head up and other tracks like that. And we also have alot of emos and they always moan about the music what we listen to I think its time we judge them!!
